Story behind the festival of Holi:

The main legend behind the celebration of Holi is the Holika and Prahlad story. Though Prahlad was the son of a demon king Hiranyakashyapu, he was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyapu was egoist who commanded everone in the kingdom to worship him. Hiranyakashyapu did not like the devotion of Prahlad towards Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyapu tried to kill Prahalad many times but everytime Prahlad got saved by Lord Vishnu. Finally Hiranyakashyapu asked his sister Holika to sit in the fire with Prahlad on her lap. Knowing that Holika had a boon that she can come out of the fire unscathed he wanted Prahlad to be burnt alive. Holika cajoled Prahlad to sit on her lap and she took her seat in the fire. Holika was unaware that the boon worked only when she entered the fire alone. While sitting on the lap of Holika Prahlad started chanting the name of Lord Vishnu. Prahlad came out of the fire unharmed, Holika burnt to death and the day is marked as the victory of good over the evil.
